{"id":336,"date":"2014-07-05T14:57:14","date_gmt":"2014-07-05T21:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=336"},"modified":"2014-07-07T09:15:46","modified_gmt":"2014-07-07T16:15:46","slug":"westercon-day-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=336","title":{"rendered":"Westercon &#8211; Day 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Melissa and I awoke early enough to get an overpriced breakfast at the hotel. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t terrible, but it was a long measure from good. \u00a0The main problem was that the eggs tasted like powder.<\/p>\n<p>With our bodies fueled, Melissa and I began to attend panels. \u00a0I won&#8217;t detail the panels too much in this post, as I&#8217;m going to be putting all of my convention notes up above when I get home. \u00a0I will say that Melissa seemed to enjoy the panels much more than I expected. \u00a0Most of the topics were about writing and the business of writing, and it wasn&#8217;t really new to me. \u00a0I thought Melissa would be bored by much of it, but she took some notes of her own on her phone.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, we wandered over to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fantasycon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FantasyCon<\/a>, taking place directly across the street at the Salt Palace. \u00a0We didn&#8217;t spend a ton of time there, but we got to see some interesting costumes, and a lot of really cool art. \u00a0We got our pictures taken in front of a green screen, and we were added to Guardians of the Galaxy. \u00a0As you can see below, Melissa is now named &#8220;Ravager&#8221; and my name is now &#8220;Outlaw.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Melissa-Brian-Guardians.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-337\" src=\"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Melissa-Brian-Guardians.jpg\" alt=\"Melissa-Brian-Guardians\" width=\"663\" height=\"663\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When all of the panels were finished, Melissa and I met up with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtoddgallowglas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michael<\/a> in preparation for going out to dinner. \u00a0Michael was feeling a little down in general, as many of his plans for the weekend had fallen through, and his sales hadn&#8217;t been stellar that day. \u00a0He was down enough to have doubts about some of the relationships he&#8217;s enjoyed over the years with some of the big names that come to the conventions.<\/p>\n<p>As we were waiting for the elevator, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schlockmercenary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Howard Tayler<\/a> approached us and asked if we had dinner plans. \u00a0We then went to a fantastic local Italian place that sold traditional pizza. \u00a0During the course of the conversation, it occurred to Howard that Michael would be perfect as a guest on the Writing Excuses Podcast, and invited Michael to join him on stage the next day. \u00a0As you can imagine, Michael&#8217;s feels of doubt were replaced with euphoria, and he walked about 6 inches off the ground back to the hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Once back at the hotel, I took Melissa up to the 15th floor, to enjoy the parties. \u00a0Unfortunately, the party scene was extremely dry. \u00a0We enjoyed a couple of nice conversations, but it wasn&#8217;t the kind of experience that I&#8217;m accustomed to at this sorts of conventions. \u00a0We excused ourselves relatively early and went to bed.<\/p>\n<p>It was a very full day, with more ups and than downs. \u00a0We&#8217;re having a really great time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Melissa and I awoke early enough to get an overpriced breakfast at the hotel. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t terrible, but it was a long measure from good. \u00a0The main problem was that the eggs tasted like powder.
