{"id":444,"date":"2014-10-16T18:38:47","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T01:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=444"},"modified":"2014-10-16T18:38:47","modified_gmt":"2014-10-17T01:38:47","slug":"blogs-of-writers-i-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=444","title":{"rendered":"Blogs of Writers I Read"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/goAlone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-445\" src=\"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/goAlone.jpg\" alt=\"goAlone\" width=\"600\" height=\"567\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As solitary as writing can be,\u00a0there is\u00a0comfort in knowing that other people out there are going through the same\u00a0triumphs and fears. \u00a0Over the years, I&#8217;ve collected bookmarks for writer&#8217;s blogs that I find interesting or inspirational.<\/p>\n<p>These are shared in no particular order.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tristandbrand.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Tristan&#8217;s Blog<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tristan is a friend of <a href=\"http:\/\/day9.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sean &#8220;Day 9&#8221; Plott<\/a>. \u00a0More importantly, he&#8217;s a very talented writer that periodically shares interesting insights about being a writer on his blog. \u00a0He doesn&#8217;t seem to post very frequently, and I don&#8217;t check it that often. \u00a0But cruising through his archive, he has a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/tristandbrand.com\/category\/writing\/\" target=\"_blank\">good posts on writing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kriswrites.com\/#sthash.ZSvOr9Pj.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kristine Kathryn Rusch<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She used to post quite a bit more to the main page. \u00a0Again, this isn&#8217;t a blog I frequent a lot. \u00a0I usually check it once a month or so. \u00a0She has a number of articles on <a href=\"http:\/\/kriswrites.com\/business-rusch-publishing-articles\/#sthash.9F2tjt3q.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\">writing<\/a>, with some great ones focusing on the business side.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deanwesleysmith.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dean Wesley Smith<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to be honest. \u00a0I have not read very much from his blog. \u00a0I&#8217;ve checked in from time to time, and I&#8217;ve meant to dive into some of his posts, but I mostly added him to my list of bookmarks after sitting in on one of his panels in Reno. \u00a0The way he described writing resonated with me. \u00a0He&#8217;s exceptionally prolific.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.enewman.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Em&#8217;s Place<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Emma Newman is simply wonderful. \u00a0I met her in Chicago, and she was extremely generous with her time and her advice. \u00a0In addition to being open and friendly, she&#8217;s a very talented writer, with a hugo nominated podcast, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enewman.co.uk\/resources\/tea-and-jeopardy-index-of-episodes\" target=\"_blank\">Tea and Jeopardy.<\/a>\u00a0 I&#8217;ve listened to her book\u00a0<em>Between Two Thorns<\/em> on audio, which she narrated. \u00a0I also subscribed to an RSS feed of her posts, so I read whatever she posts as soon as she posts it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtoddgallowglas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>M Todd Gallowglas<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Almost any time I reference &#8220;Michael&#8221; in my posts, I&#8217;m talking about this guy. \u00a0He&#8217;s one of my oldest friends, and he&#8217;s been a huge encouragement in my writing pursuits. \u00a0He&#8217;s independently published several successful series, and he performs live storytelling shows. \u00a0As Brandon Sanderson says, &#8220;M Todd Gallowglas is the real deal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/katanapen.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Katana \/ Pen<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I met Setsu at Convolution 2013, when she and I were both in the same writer&#8217;s workshop. \u00a0Later, we tried forming a writer&#8217;s group, but there were some logistical problems keeping that going. \u00a0She&#8217;s recently had some great successes, with one of her stories published in a\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Happily-Never-Christina-Elaine-Collins\/dp\/069223764X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1412056493&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=setsu+uzume\" target=\"_blank\">Happily Never After<\/a><\/em>, and the launch of a radio play, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogtalkradio.com\/rithebard\/2014\/10\/15\/chatting-with-sherri-the-cast-of-unfortunate-demonic-incident-number-271\" target=\"_blank\">Unfortunate Demonic Incident Number 271<\/a>.&#8221; Setsu is bold in the places where I am timid. \u00a0In addition to blogging about writing, she also talks about feminism and martial arts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/laurensapala.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lauren Sapala<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have not met Lauren in person, though we almost got to meet at Convolution 2014. \u00a0Lauren is a writer and a writing coach. \u00a0She frequently posts amazingly helpful articles on how to get past the hurdles that are part of being a writer. \u00a0I&#8217;ve subscribed to her RSS feed, and read all of her articles as soon as she posts them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hughhowey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Hugh Howey<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hugh is a successful, independent author, probably best known for\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wool-Omnibus-Edition-Silo-Saga-ebook\/dp\/B0071XO8RA\" target=\"_blank\">Wool<\/a>.<\/em> \u00a0I got to sit down at a Kaffeeklatch with him in Chicago, and I knew immediately that if I&#8217;m ever successful as a writer, I want to be exactly like Hugh Howey. \u00a0He was friendly and approachable. \u00a0He was delighted to meet up with people at the convention, and gave us each a copy of his book.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m subscribed to an RSS feed for his posts, and read them when they come in. \u00a0He mostly writes about independent and self-published writing. \u00a0Lately, his focus has been on what&#8217;s been going on with Hatchet and Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/leasspell.net\/blog\/jennifer-at-leasspell\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jennifer at Leasspell<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jennifer was one of the pros in one of the writer&#8217;s workshops I attended at Convolution 2014. \u00a0Like Emma Newman, Jennifer has been very encouraging.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve only had Jennifer&#8217;s blog on my radar for a few weeks. \u00a0One of her more <a href=\"http:\/\/leasspell.net\/blog\/jennifer\/farley-file-j-l-doty-someone-publishers-know\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent posts<\/a> featured <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jldoty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">J. L.
