{"id":453,"date":"2014-10-19T23:59:14","date_gmt":"2014-10-20T06:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=453"},"modified":"2014-10-19T23:59:14","modified_gmt":"2014-10-20T06:59:14","slug":"different-ways-to-tell-a-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=453","title":{"rendered":"Different Ways to Tell a Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was going to talk about &#8220;Villains&#8221; tonight, but I got distracted by a game. \u00a0I was so distracted, in fact, that I&#8217;m perilously close to failing the Blog-tober challenge. \u00a0I better type quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The game I was playing is called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/fullbright.company\/gonehome\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gone Home<\/a>&#8221; and it is an interactive story.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to give any spoilers. \u00a0In fact, I want to encourage anyone that hasn&#8217;t played it to go to Steam, give them $20, and get this. \u00a0You will not regret it.<\/p>\n<p>In the game, you are Katie, and you&#8217;ve just come home after being abroad for a year. \u00a0Your flight was late, so you&#8217;re getting to your home in the middle of the night during a heavy storm.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s really all I can tell you without giving things away.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a long game. \u00a0If you&#8217;re like me and you look around and stumble around lost for a bit, you&#8217;ll invest about 4 hours. \u00a0And, if you&#8217;re like me, at the end of those 4 hours you will be touched. \u00a0I very nearly cried, and that&#8217;s saying something.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve heard that there are other games that are essentially interactive stories that I should play. \u00a0I&#8217;ve heard good things about Last of Us, Walking Dead, and Wolf Among Us. \u00a0I haven&#8217;t picked them up yet, but I think I probably should.<\/p>\n<p>Playing &#8220;Gone Home&#8221; is good for writers. \u00a0It demonstrates how setting can impact the mood. \u00a0It shows in a very visual way how different story lines can be woven together. \u00a0Since it&#8217;s an interactive story, it&#8217;s possible to consume some of the story out of order, which demonstrates non-linear story telling in a unique way.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s&#8230; it&#8217;s just a good story. \u00a0Trust me.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, I&#8217;ll talk about Villains. \u00a0Now it&#8217;s time for me to go to bed, but I&#8217;m going to have to stop and give my daughter a hug on the way. \u00a0Once you&#8217;ve played &#8220;Gone Home,&#8221; you&#8217;ll understand why.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was going to talk about &#8220;Villains&#8221; tonight, but I got distracted by a game. \u00a0I was so distracted, in fact, that I&#8217;m perilously close to failing the Blog-tober challenge. \u00a0I better type quickly.
