{"id":480,"date":"2014-10-31T14:28:36","date_gmt":"2014-10-31T21:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=480"},"modified":"2014-10-31T14:28:36","modified_gmt":"2014-10-31T21:28:36","slug":"last-minute-prep-for-nano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=480","title":{"rendered":"Last Minute Prep for Nano"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s October 31st. \u00a0Halloween. \u00a0It&#8217;s a day to be dressed up like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/priates2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-481\" src=\"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/priates2014.jpg\" alt=\"priates2014\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, if the weather doesn&#8217;t keep all of the kids away, Melissa and I are going to hand out candy. \u00a0We&#8217;re talking full size candy bars and a can of soda to every kid that comes to our door. \u00a0Well, we&#8217;ll give Caprisuns to the little kids. \u00a0We have our costumes, candy, and drinks set aside. \u00a0We&#8217;re ready for Halloween.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Are we ready for <a href=\"http:\/\/nanowrimo.org\" target=\"_blank\">NaNoWriMo<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Quite frankly, I don&#8217;t know. \u00a0I never feel ready to start a new story. \u00a0It&#8217;s the same sort of fear that I&#8217;ve talked about all this month. \u00a0Will I be able to get my ideas across? \u00a0Do my ideas suck? \u00a0Am I capable yet of being the kind of writer I want to be?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the wonderful thing about NaNoWriMo. \u00a0As <a href=\"http:\/\/laurensapala.com\/?page_id=5\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren Sapala<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/laurensapala.com\/?p=2686\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>, we don&#8217;t have time for fear during this month. \u00a0This exercise forces us to ignore\u00a0our inner editor, set aside our doubts, and just write. \u00a0We might fall behind, and that will make it more difficult. \u00a0As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hughhowey.com\/bio\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hugh Howey<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hughhowey.com\/nanowrimo-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>, it can put a lot of pressure on a writer, but that pressure can be a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>What can\u00a0a writer do to get ready?<\/p>\n<p>This is what I&#8217;ve done:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I wrote a blog post every day in the month of October, reinforcing the habit of writing something&#8230; anything&#8230; every day. \u00a0With an average word count of 800 words per post, I&#8217;ve written close to 25,000 words this month. \u00a0That&#8217;s half the target for November. \u00a0A good warm up.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve decided on a story idea. \u00a0It&#8217;s one that I&#8217;ve been putting off for about 12 years.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve been thinking about the story constantly. \u00a0Whenever I go for a walk (and I go for lots of walks), I&#8217;ve played out details and ideas in my mind.<\/li>\n<li>This week, I sat down and made a very, very rough outline. \u00a0I don&#8217;t want to outline too much, since that spoils the story for me. \u00a0But I need more than nothing.<\/li>\n<li>I created a project in Scrivener.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I still need to come up with more names. \u00a0My <a href=\"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=478\">post last night<\/a>\u00a0was not accidental. \u00a0I have to think about names, and get some written down before I start, so that I don&#8217;t get hung up on the names when I get to those characters.<\/p>\n<p>After that?
