Maybe I’m a little late to this topic, but I just don’t understand what is going on in North Carolina. \u00a0I don’t understand the arguments.<\/p>\n
In summary, North Carolina is requiring people use bathrooms that match the gender on their birth certificate, rather than the gender they identify with<\/a>.<\/p>\n Here’s a quote from the Washington Post article I just linked:<\/p>\n “Supporters say the new law protects all people from having to share bathrooms with people who make them feel unsafe.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Do you know what a transgender person feels when they’re going to a public restroom? \u00a0A little bit of stress, and an insatiable need to pee.<\/p>\n I just don’t get the big deal.<\/p>\n “But Brian!” cried the Strawman. “Laws enabling\u00a0transgender people the\u00a0use of\u00a0bathrooms they identify with will allow predatory male rapists to go into women’s restrooms. \u00a0Don’t you fear for the safety of your wife and daughter?”<\/p>\n If I thought the fear reasonable, then yes, I’d be concerned. \u00a0But as far as I can tell, a predatory rapist isn’t\u00a0concerned with entering a women’s restroom legally. \u00a0A law preventing transgender men and women\u00a0from entering a\u00a0restroom isn’t going to stop a rapist.<\/p>\n The people in favor of laws like what North Carolina passed refer to the safety of women. \u00a0These people don’t voice any concern over the safety of men. \u00a0Not only because the whole attitude behind the notion is one of coddling and misogyny, but also,\u00a0no one is really\u00a0concerned with gay men raping men in the bathroom. \u00a0We’re not concerned with it, because it isn’t a reasonable fear, because public\u00a0bathroom are\u00a0not where most of these attacks are taking place<\/a>.<\/p>\n
