{"id":794,"date":"2016-03-31T21:06:39","date_gmt":"2016-04-01T04:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=794"},"modified":"2016-03-31T21:06:39","modified_gmt":"2016-04-01T04:06:39","slug":"lets-talk-about-snyders-superman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=794","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s Talk about Snyder&#8217;s Superman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A week ago, I went to the movies and saw one of the first showings of Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice. \u00a0I&#8217;ve had a week to think about it. \u00a0I&#8217;ve read other people&#8217;s reviews and opinions. \u00a0Now I&#8217;d like to share mine.<\/p>\n<p>This post will be full of spoilers. \u00a0If you do not want the movie spoiled, stop reading here and come back after you&#8217;ve seen the movie.<\/p>\n<p>First off, I think the reviews have been a little harsh. \u00a0The movie is not that bad. \u00a0It&#8217;s not amazing, which is probably why it&#8217;s being panned so hard. \u00a0We wanted a live action meeting of Batman and Superman on the silver screen that would knock our socks off. \u00a0This movie didn&#8217;t do that.<\/p>\n<p>Zack Snyder reached far, his ambition greater than what he could deliver. \u00a0He wanted to give us something akin to what we&#8217;ve been getting from Marvel. \u00a0He tried to tap into the dark and gritty\u00a0tone of both Nolan&#8217;s Batman and Frank Miller&#8217;s <em>The Dark Knight Returns<\/em>. \u00a0He crammed the story with characters and scenes in order to hint\u00a0at a larger, epic story. \u00a0He tried to do all this in one movie, and in his efforts, lost track of making a single, enjoyable standalone movie.<\/p>\n<p>So far, I haven&#8217;t said anything that hasn&#8217;t already been said on the internet about this movie. \u00a0Other things you may have already read&#8230; Ben Affleck filled role perfectly. \u00a0Wonder Woman looked perfect, and though her role in this movie was small,\u00a0she&#8217;ll probably be amazing in her standalone movie. \u00a0Eisenberg did a terrible job as Lex Luthor. \u00a0Doomsday didn&#8217;t look very good, sometimes. \u00a0The\u00a0death of Superman could have been handled better.<\/p>\n<p>Those things are easy to point out. \u00a0Many critics and reviews are saying that Batman v Superman is not a good movie. \u00a0I think\u00a0that might not be\u00a0specific enough. \u00a0The real problem is that\u00a0Batman v Superman is not a good Superman movie.<\/p>\n<p>What if we didn&#8217;t think of Henry Cavill&#8217;s character as Superman? \u00a0If\u00a0we disassociated his character from Superman, would BvS be a better movie?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe. \u00a0Let&#8217;s compare Superman with Cavill&#8217;s character. \u00a0To keep them straight, I will rename Henry Cavill&#8217;s character something more inline with what he portrayed: Ironheart.<\/p>\n<p>Superman is more than just the costume and the powers. \u00a0He is the ultimate Boy Scout, honest to a fault, and moral. \u00a0He does what is right, because it is right. \u00a0Life throws him curve balls, but he rises above it. \u00a0He stands for hope. \u00a0Though he comes from a different planet, Earth is his home, and he has friends and family here.<\/p>\n<p>Ironheart is weighed down by the darkness around him. \u00a0He is on Earth, but he is separate. \u00a0A powerful stranger. \u00a0He wants to do what is right most of the time, but he&#8217;s haunted by the ghost of his father, telling him that no good deed goes unpunished. \u00a0Ironheart has two tethers keeping him grounded: Lois Lane, and his mother. \u00a0The S on his chest stands for hope, but he doesn&#8217;t have any of his own, and he doesn&#8217;t know how to inspire it.<\/p>\n<p>As a writer, I like Ironheart. \u00a0I like the story potential in a character like that. \u00a0I like Superman, too, but I think I&#8217;d have an easier time writing a character like Ironheart. \u00a0The character Cavill portrayed is vulnerable in ways that Superman is not, and I think that is interesting.<\/p>\n<p>The movie has other problems, no doubt about it. \u00a0It is a\u00a0beautiful, joyless affair, with major plot holes and a villain that is also miscast or misnamed, or both. \u00a0But the movie&#8217;s\u00a0greatest sin is trying to take a character like Ironheart and calling him Superman. \u00a0The two are not interchangeable.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully,\u00a0Zack Snyder learns from this. \u00a0He&#8217;s good at making pretty movies. \u00a0 \u00a0Maybe he just needs to work with someone else that can keep him grounded and focused.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A week ago, I went to the movies and saw one of the first showings of Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice. \u00a0I&#8217;ve had a week to think about it. \u00a0I&#8217;ve read other people&#8217;s reviews and opinions. \u00a0Now I&#8217;d like to share mine.
