{"id":954,"date":"2017-10-31T22:34:01","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T05:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=954"},"modified":"2017-10-31T22:34:01","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T05:34:01","slug":"halloween-2017-and-the-end-of-blogtober","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briancebuhl.com\/?p=954","title":{"rendered":"Halloween 2017 and the End of Blogtober"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Halloween, everyone!\u00a0 We did it!\u00a0 We made it through October!<\/p>\n<p>This is the third year in a row where I&#8217;ve stayed home on Halloween and handed out candy.\u00a0 And, it&#8217;s the third year in a row where we gave out full sized candy bars and cans of soda or bags of Capri Sun, depending on the age of the trick-or-treater.\u00a0 I also made sure that the parents walking their kids got a soda and a candy bar, too.<\/p>\n<p>When you were of trick-or-treating age, did you ever have a friend tell you about one of those houses that was giving out &#8220;the good stuff?&#8221; Cans of soda, full sized candy bars, maybe handfuls of the non-generic?\u00a0 Or maybe you were lucky enough to find those houses yourself.\u00a0 I determined a long time ago that I wanted to BE that house.<\/p>\n<p>Three years in a row, and it&#8217;s paying off.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t do much in the way of decorating.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t have a jack-o-lantern outside.\u00a0 I went outside once or twice and played my sax a little (my costume this year was Phantom of the Opera).\u00a0 Other than that, the only thing to distinguish our house from any other is the memory from previous years.\u00a0 And it worked.\u00a0 We had a bunch of trick-or-treaters, and they were all great.<\/p>\n<p>Halloween was a success this year, but I can&#8217;t say the same for Blogtober 2017.\u00a0 I had been doing great until that kidney stone hit me up for five straight days of torture.\u00a0 I pushed through the pain the first four days, but by the fifth day, I didn&#8217;t have it in me.\u00a0 I let it go.<\/p>\n<p>It only takes one bad day to break a goal like Blogtober.\u00a0 My task was to write one blog post every day, and I did not complete that task.\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t figured out how to go back in time yet.<\/p>\n<p>But, I did learn some things from the experience.\u00a0 I found the places in my schedule where I can sneak in writing time.\u00a0 Even though I didn&#8217;t write a blog post every day, I did write close to 30,000 words in blog posts.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not too shabby.<\/p>\n<p>In a couple of hours, I&#8217;m going to start a new novel for NaNoWriMo.\u00a0 I probably won&#8217;t stay up too late writing tonight, since I still have to work tomorrow.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m committed.\u00a0 I&#8217;m excited!\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t written an Arthur Kane story in a couple of decades.\u00a0 I&#8217;m curious to see how much he&#8217;s changed.<\/p>\n<p>I know the world is going to be interesting.\u00a0 A spinning city on the moon, with vicious robot dogs, emerging artificial intelligences, a seedy underbelly, and corrupt cops.\u00a0 A place where the gravity is as false as the lies that hold the place together.\u00a0 A place of fog and deep shadows.\u00a0 A place where it&#8217;s never quite day, never quite night, and nothing ever stops moving.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to have fun with this story.\u00a0 When I can, I&#8217;ll post updates here.\u00a0 Other than that, I&#8217;ll probably be pretty quiet, with my head down trying to reach the 50,000 word goal.\u00a0 Unlike Blogtober, one bad day won&#8217;t ruin me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Halloween, everyone!\u00a0 We did it!\u00a0 We made it through October!
